Richard emigrated to Canada after the 1911 census to the Toronto area.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eHe enlisted on 16\/09\/1914 at Valcartier Camp as a Private. To D Company, 9th battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade, with service number 18522. After delays on travel to France, he transferred to the 2nd Canadian Infantry Battalion (Eastern Ontario Regiment) in March 1915, where he fought in the 2nd battle of Ypres, St Julien and Festubert. He sadly got shell shock on the 6th June 1916 after a shell landed near him in Hooge, causing him severe concussion, vomiting and coughing up blood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eHe transferred first to Etaples field hospital, then to Edinburgh and then to Colchester hospitals after developing heart problems as a result of his condition. He did make it back to his unit eventually but did mostly sanitation duties before returning home quickly due to heart complications.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eRichard then moved back to Cornwall and served in the Home Guard in WW2 earning the Defence Medal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGeorge Albert Kitto (33769, 010915)\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eGeorge served in the 1st and 10th battalions of the Duke of Cornwalls light infantry, with service number 33769. He later transferred to the Hampshire Regiment at the rank of Lance Corporal, with service number 010915. I haven't dug up as much about George but I know he was entitled to wear the wound stripe, so was evidently wounded at some point. He attended Brighton College, becoming a house prefect in 1917. He enlisted in the Navy on 1\/03\/1918 as a Midshipman, quickly climbing the ranks during and after WW1. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe served on HMS Canada, HMS Warspite, HMS Skillful, HMS Verity, HMS President, HMS Victory, HMS Cicala, HMS Moth, HMS Cicala, HMS Moth, HMS Tower, HMS Columbine and HMS Wessex before getting his own command. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn 1930, Cecil was granted command of HMS Skate before moving on to command HMS Verity, HMS Vidette, HMS Foresight and finally, at the rank of Commander in 1941, he was given command of the destroyer HMS Electra. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eHighlights of his command on HMS Electra were :\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e24 May 1941 HMS Electra took part in the hunt for the Bismarck, before rescuing the 3 survivors from the British battlecruiser HMS Hood, which was sunk by the Bismarck off Iceland. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e21 Aug 1941 Operation (Convoy) Dervish From Hvalfjord to Archangelsk in Northern Russia\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e10 Dec 1941 Participated in the Force Z sortie from Singapore. Rescued 571 survivors from HMS Repulse, which was sunk by Japanese aircraft. These survivors included one of Cecil's old school mates. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e27 Feb 1942 Electra took part in the battle of the Java Sea. She managed to evade the shells and torpedoes in the first round. Then Exeter received a hit which destroyed a 4-inch gun mount and then exploded in a boiler room, causing her to lose speed, seeing that Exeter was in trouble, Electra headed toward the enemy ships, followed by the other two British destroyers, to cover Exeter's escape. After several near misses from gunfire from the Japanese light cruiser Jintsū, Electra fired back, scoring several hits on Jintsū and the destroyer Asagumo disabling her engines, she also managed to score hits on destroyers Minegumo and Tokitsukaze. During this slugging match, Electra sustained several hits, which knocked out her A and X gun mounts, wrecked the electrical system forward, cut off all communications, destroyed a searchlight platform, damaged the after boiler room, and ruptured the main steam line. Electra came to a total halt, she fired off her torpedoes and started to list to port. After a fire started under 'B' gun mount and 'Y' Electra ran out of ammunition then an abandoned ship was ordered by Cecil, who refused to leave until everyone who could be saved was saved. In 1926 Brodie was posted to India to join No 5, an Army co-operation squadron; aboard the troop ship Derbyshire, he found that Shaw alias Lawrence was in the draft under his command. Two years later he again came upon Lawrence when he was posted as 27 Squadron's C Flight commander at Miramshah Fort on the North-West Frontier, surrounded by unruly Waziri and Afghan tribes. Lawrence served there as Brodie's clerk. \"A very good one too\", Brodie recalled. \"He almost always produced a typed reply before presenting me with the original incoming letter or signal.\" Air HQ India was considering withdrawing the flight from the fort but Brodie was eager to retain his first command, and Lawrence to remain in the wilderness. Between them, they persuaded the authorities to leave the flight at Miramshah. Lawrence wrote from Miramshah that \"we have had an idyllic two and a half months here under the best and kindest CO of my experience\". He repaid Brodie's kindness by using his influence in Whitehall and elsewhere to obtain perks for the fort. He even persuaded George Bernard Shaw to offer to pay for a swimming pool, though this project eventually had to be abandoned. After his years in India, Brodie joined No 43 Squadron (the \"Fighting Cocks\") at Tangmere in 1930. Flying a Siskin III A, he was selected for the aerobatic team in the 1931 Hendon and Croydon air displays.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eLater in the 1930s, as an armament specialist, Brodie served in Iraq. He joined the Royal Exodus Hunt and also hunted with the Baghdad Boar Hunt. On the outbreak of war in 1939 he was an armament and navigation officer at the Air Ministry's gunnery and navigational schools. He set up the new Central Gunnery School and in August 1940 became its first commander at Warmwell in Dorset.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eAs Senior Air Staff Officer in No 25 and 29 (Armament) Groups, Brodie was much envied for owning and flying his own Gladiator, an obsolescent biplane which he had retrieved from a maintenance unit. He caused a sensation when he flew his Gladiator into Aldergrove, in Northern Ireland, when assuming command of that station in September 1942. The next year he was posted to Iceland as SASO for operations, and between 1945 and 1947 was acting Air Vice-Marshal advising the Italian Air Force\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eLater in 1947 he was appointed deputy director of Intelligence (Security) at the Air Ministry. He was a keen yachtsman, boxed, ski-ed, rowed and played golf, rugby, squash and tennis. Brodie was appointed OBE in 1941 and mentioned in despatches in 1945. He was a Deputy Lieutenant for Buckinghamshire. By early 1942, he was serving in the 31st battalion.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eJames appears to work in the signals room for the regiment HQ, detailing signals to aircraft and the various battalions and commands. He works the switchboards most days. His wife Grace seems to fulfil a similar role, probably also with the Suffolk Regiment but possibly at Whitehall. His diaries are unusually detailed and include many details on his signals work. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eIn September 1943, James was sent to Tunisia where he seems to have been in more of a diplomat\/attache role, training and coordinating with American and other allied signal staff as well as regularly communicating with senior members of the Tunisian, French and British armed forces in North Africa, particularly the Bey, his guards and religious figures. There is entire diary and a half dedicated to his diplomatic\/attache work in Tunisia. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eJames appears to have still been serving under the 31st Suffolk’s during his time in Tunisia although the battalion themselves were never there. Tom then transferred to 90 Squadron. Post war, he was promoted to Flight Lieutenant in 1948 and then served in the Mau Mau rebellion in Kenya. After Mau Mau, he transferred to 100 Squadron, where he remained for the rest of his service into the 1960s. Tom died at the age of 93 in 2015. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eCheck out separate lots for Tom’s flight suit, battledress and cap.
