Richard emigrated to Canada after the 1911 census to the Toronto area.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eHe enlisted on 16\/09\/1914 at Valcartier Camp as a Private. To D Company, 9th battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade, with service number 18522. After delays on travel to France, he transferred to the 2nd Canadian Infantry Battalion (Eastern Ontario Regiment) in March 1915, where he fought in the 2nd battle of Ypres, St Julien and Festubert. He sadly got shell shock on the 6th June 1916 after a shell landed near him in Hooge, causing him severe concussion, vomiting and coughing up blood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eHe transferred first to Etaples field hospital, then to Edinburgh and then to Colchester hospitals after developing heart problems as a result of his condition. He did make it back to his unit eventually but did mostly sanitation duties before returning home quickly due to heart complications.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eRichard then moved back to Cornwall and served in the Home Guard in WW2 earning the Defence Medal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGeorge Albert Kitto (33769, 010915)\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eGeorge served in the 1st and 10th battalions of the Duke of Cornwalls light infantry, with service number 33769. He later transferred to the Hampshire Regiment at the rank of Lance Corporal, with service number 010915. I haven't dug up as much about George but I know he was entitled to wear the wound stripe, so was evidently wounded at some point. By early 1942, he was serving in the 31st battalion.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eJames appears to work in the signals room for the regiment HQ, detailing signals to aircraft and the various battalions and commands. He works the switchboards most days. His wife Grace seems to fulfil a similar role, probably also with the Suffolk Regiment but possibly at Whitehall. His diaries are unusually detailed and include many details on his signals work. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eIn September 1943, James was sent to Tunisia where he seems to have been in more of a diplomat\/attache role, training and coordinating with American and other allied signal staff as well as regularly communicating with senior members of the Tunisian, French and British armed forces in North Africa, particularly the Bey, his guards and religious figures. At 3:50PM on the 22\u003csup\u003end\u003c\/sup\u003e of March, the Germans launched their attack, breaking the battalions flanks and forcing them to withdraw first to Aubigny then Mill Wood and then along St Quentin Road eventually taking up a position on the banks of St Quentin canal. At some point in this chaotic withdrawal, Fred was left behind and captured in Roupy and being sent to Cassel prisoner of war camp. Either way, whilst still in the 4th battalion, he was assigned to the 5th Army Infantry\/Musketry School in Saint Léger lès Domart. It is unusual for a private to be assigned to such a unit, being usually made up of officers and instructors. In May 1918, he along with many staff members of the musketry schools was called up to defend against the German Spring Offensive, being assigned to the 9th battalion, Yorkshire Regiment and sent to the field. He then returned back to the 4th battalion and the 5th Infantry\/Musketry School in October 1918. Hirst was Entitled to wear the wound stripe and his injury appear serious enough that he was transferred to the Labour Corps, to 957 Area Employment Company, service number 578115 . If this is true, William would have been with the 2nd in Kuldana, India when war broke out in August, arriving back in Britian on the 20th September. The 2nd landed at Le Havre on 6th November 1914, seeing action at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in March 1915 and the Battle of Aubers Ridge in May 1915. The battalion were digging supports trenches in the vicinity of Aubers Ridge when William was killed in action on the morning of 15th June 1915, age 23, by a rifle bullet to the head whilst on guard duty.  Company Sergeant Major G. A. Robson wrote to Jane Tilsley saying “I am sorry indeed to inform you that your son, no. 5480, Rifleman W. Tilsley, was killed in action this morning. He was hit in the head by a rifle bullet, being killed instantly. You have our deepest sympathy in your great loss. It is our loss as well for your son was thought well of by officers and men. He gave his life for his country, and died at his post. He was buried in the regimental graveyard, where his grave will be cared for. We are left awhile to mourn his loss. I enclose the few photographs, thinking you might care to keep them in dear remembrance- I remain yours sincerely, G A Robson, Company Sergeant Major”. Presumably a friend, Rifleman Finlay also wrote to Jane Tilsley saying “To you his company send their deepest sympathy for your relative was beloved by the whole of his colleagues. He was let in and enlisted to the Rifle Brigade with service number 5461. However he was found in May when he was forced to write an admission and was discharged for making a false statement of age. He later re-enlisted, (its unclear when but judging by the articles on William’s death saying his mother had two sons in service it was before June 1915). He joined the Machine Gun Corps with service number 46218, where he was mentioned in dispatches, but eventually transferred to the 1\/5th (City of Glasgow) Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry with service number 55741. The 1\/5th had originally been based in Egypt, its unclear when Joseph joined them but he was certainly with them by the time they arrived on the Western Front from Alexandria on the 11th April 1918. They then took up positions on the front line near Vimy on the 6th May, before moving to the surroundings of Arras where they took part in the Battle of Albert. On the 23rd August, the battalion moved from Bellacourt to North East of Ficheux and prepared for an assault on the Hindenburg Line to push forwards to the Scarpe. On the 24th the battalion assaulted the Hindenburg Line, being caught crossing the Cojeul river and in the thick wire guarding the German lines. Joseph was killed in action during this attack on the 24th August 1918, aged 19. He is buried in Wancourt British Cemetery, grave VII. He stayed aboard HMS Sutlej until it was paid off at Devonport on 4th May 1917, becoming an accomadation ship.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eFrom May to June 1917 Charles was stationed back in HMS Vivid II (Devonport Shorebase), before being posted to HMS Idaho on the 18th June (Auxiliary Patrol Base and Tug Yacht requisitioned during WW1). He can’t have spent long there though, transferring to HMS Prize before her final patrol in August 1917.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eHMS Prize was originally a German three-masted Schooner named Else, but she became the first German ship to be captured by the Royal Navy in WW1, being renamed HMS Prize. In April 1917 she was converted into a Q Ship, these were heavily armed merchant ships with concealed weaponry, designed to lure submarines into making surface attacks in order to sink them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eIn August, with Charles aboard, she set sail into the Atlantic under a Swedish flag, accompanied by HMS D6 (Submarine). On the 13th August, North West of Ireland, she spotted a U- Boat, UB-48 and attempted to shell it. However UB-48 was undamaged and submerged to evade the attack. Late that evening, with D6 and Prize on the lookout, UB-48 fired two torpedoes at Prize, striking and sinking the ship, along with Charles who was killed in action in the early hours of the 14 Aug 1917, age 22.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eSadly, Charles’s body was never recovered and no trace of HMS Prize or her crew was ever found. He then joined ‘Marshall’s Column’ pushing north across Iraq, it appears he was wounded in action on 6th April 1917, near Dogamah at a crossing of the Tigris river.  (the record is very damaged so it is hard to make out the date).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eHe received a silver wound badge, number B293347, included in the set, matching the war badge records.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eAfter this he appears to have been transferred to the 3rd Reserve Battalion, so his wound must have been relatively severe. Curiously he is listed as serving in Bangalore India from November 1917 but I can find no mention of the 3rd Reserve Battalion being posted there. They left Brindisi on the morning of January 8th, 1916. However what they did not know was that weeks before, on 10 December 1915, mines had been laid outside the harbour by a small German minelaying submarine, UC14. The ship departed at 8:30 am but only six miles North East of Brindisi they hit the mine field, striking a mine and sinking entirely by 8:45. Of the 200 men on the SS Citta de Palermo, around half were saved, but sadly, Sydney was not one of them, being listed as killed as a result of active service on 8th January 1916, at the age of 26.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eMajor Bearne of the A.S.C wrote to Syndey’s father “The ship struck a mine and went, down in just five minutes. The crew were Italian, we had to fend for ourselves. We got three…(unreadable)…and about 20 of us were launching a raft when the ship dived down. We were all flung about and I somehow came to the top again about a quarter of a mile from anyone and was picked up. I fear most of the others must have got hit by floating spars, etc. I was saved by a cigarette case which I had in my pocket, and which is flattened by a blow from a spar, which undoubtedly would have broken a rib at least. There were nearly men killed by the explosion, which occurred exactly under where they were sleeping. I shall ever remember the behaviour of our men, which was absolutely perfect throughout; they kept perfectly cool when the crew were all panicking and obeyed orders is if they were on parade.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eLieutenant W Vowles, A.S.C, also wrote to Sydney’s father, saying “It is a great comfort to know that all our men behaved like heroes. Many of them were close to that part of the boat which was struck by the mine, or torpedo, and we have reason to believe that these were all killed by the explosion. From the first moment to the end there was only about 15 minutes. My wristlet watch stopped at 8:45. I did not know your son by name for I had only been attached to Major Bearne for a few days, but I knew most of them by sight, and a nicer lot of fellows I never expect to meet again. There was no panic or fear amongst our men, of whom more than 60 were lost. I myself went down with the boat, and being on the main deck and without my lifebelt, and all my clothes on, it was a miracle that I was eventually saved. I floated to the surface near a small floating boat, and having my Sam Browne belt on one of my comrades, Quartermaster Roberts, caught hold of the shoulder strap and held me tight until we were picked up by a French torpedo destroyer.
