A fantastic WW1 MK1 'Brodie' helmet, named to a Supply Co.149F.. (unreadable) with initials, J.J.S. This is likely Army Service Corps Horse Transport Supply Company 149 who were attached to the 17th Northern Division as of October 1914, although it could also refer to the 149 Northumberland Brigade Army Service Corps Supply Company (T.F.).

Marked F.S.45., being made by Thomas Firth & Sons, Sheffield, the liner is also stamped (although this is hard to picture) and appears to be made by the Army & Navy Cooperative Society as is common. The liner is the pre 1917 pattern.

The helmet appears to have been reissued at some point in the war, bearing evidence of the wartime army refit/refurbishment departments work on the chinstrap and upper rivets.

Sadly it has only a partial chinstrap and the condition of the liners leather pad is brittle.

Buyers please be aware both British and American made MK1 helmets contain a small layer of asbestos between the woollen felt and cotton wool pad of the liner. The pad is intact and fully covered by the felt in this example so should be safe to display, however wearing this helmet is not advised. Buyers should satisfy themselves with any safety concerns before purchasing.
