Private/Rifleman Gilbert Evans (3541, 306170)

Gilbert was from Holbeck in Leeds and enlisted at some point before 1917, having a pre 1917 service number of 3541. He enlisted into the 2/8th (Leeds Rifles) battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment. He was later issued with the service number 306170 in 1917 before landing with his battalion in Le havre in 1917.

The battalion moved towards the front, taking part in the fighting on the Ancre in February and March before following the German retreat to the Hindenburg line. By early April 1917, the battalion had followed the Germans and set up in Ecoust Saint Mein (south east of Arras) on the 6th April, just 500 yards from the Hindenburg Line. On the 7th April 1917 Lieutenant J. C. K. Alexander led small scout party of just a few men, including Gilbert, to investigate the German wire along the Hindenburg Line. In this scout party, 2 men were wounded and one killed, that one being Gilbert. Gilbert is remembered on bay 4 of the Arras memorial.
