A WW1 British War Medal and cap badge for John George Prince, trench mortar battery, 1/4th (Hallamshire) Btn Yorks & Lancs Regiment, who was killed in action at Passchendaele.

Private John Goerge Prince (33124) 

John was born in Allerton Bywater, it is unclear when he enlisted but he joined the Trench Mortar Battery, 1/4th(Hallamshire) Battalion with service number 3314. By the 8thof October 1917, the battalion had taken up positions west of Passchendaele. On the 9th October 1917, the attack order was given but the battalions advance was hampered by flooded streams with waist high water and heavy machine gun fire from multiple directions. John was killed at some point in the advance and is now remembered in Tyne Cot cemetery somewhere between panel 125 and 128. His pension payments to his mother and widow were refused
