A scarce 1868-1873 Captain’s uniform of the Royal Artillery, comprising: tunic with collar rank, pre 1871 gilt buttons, fine gilt bullion lace trim; together with a pair of red striped overalls

The ranking insignia used pre 1881 is quite different to the more common modern system. The lack of a line of braiding on the collar and sleeves paired with the pip and crown indicates a captain. The jacket is denoted as pre 1881 by the shape of its collar, as well as the ranking pips being on the collar rather than the epaulets, which are also pre 1881 pattern. This pattern was worn from 1868-1880. The buttons on this jacket are pre 1873.

Lovely bullion wire rank pips on the collar.  Brocading on the cuffs is beautiful.

Named to Hentry Webster Shakerley. Who was made a captain in 1863.
