A Rare Pre 1881 Victorian Major’s 2nd Somerset Militia Tunic, dating from 1868-1880.
The ranking insignia used pre 1881 is quite different to the more common modern system. The single line of braiding on the collar and sleeves paired with the single pip indicates a major. The jacket is denoted as pre 1881 by the shape and braiding of its collar, as well as the ranking pips being on the collar rather than the epaulets, which are also pre 1881 pattern. This pattern was worn from 1868-1880.
With beautiful brocaded collar and brocaded cuffs with black velvet facings.
Bullion wire rank pips as collar badges
Victorian crown 2nd Somerset buttons present - one missing on the back. The buttons alone on this jacket are worth upwards of £150.
Chest Size approx 35 inches. Slim fitting. Armpit to armpit measurement is 18 inches. Armpit to cuff is 19 inches
Jacket Condition - generally good for its age with some mothing trails and small holes in number of places - the most significant being on the back across the shoulders. Some under belt fading on one side. Looks like a period repair around the top front button.
