An incredibly rare WW2 pencil dagger designed by MI9 for use in the SOE (Special Operations Executive) and OSS (Office of Strategic Services). Some of these pencils were also shipped by MI9 to POW camps to aid escape and evasion.
These were fully functioning pencils, with real lead on one end, but with the middle hollowed out to conceal a dagger, which appears like the lead stick. It would originally have had a small wooden bung on the end, concealing the dagger. The dagger is around 5 inches long, with a fluted blade which is no longer sharp. It features two holes towards the top that would have been for a small section of twine to allow for easy extraction from the pencil, or to wrap around the users hand or attach a handle if they needed to use the blade.
The pencil is marked made in England, BLACK, copy, BLUE 48-28 HARD. It is makers marked SO for Her Majesties Stationery Office. There is a small amount of rusting on the dagger but it is generally in good condtion.
