Very Rare Original Order Of St Sylvester Papal Ceremonial Bicorne Vatican
Body covered with black mohair, edged on silk
With yellow and white fabric cockade denoting the Vatican, and with a gold bullion wire decoration secured by a gilt brass securing button showing a Maltese Cross and the inscription 'P M Sanc Silvester'.
Gold bullion wire decorations at either end
Lovely pleated silk lining inside.
In generally excellent condition - some loose fabric threads at one end
The bicorme probably dates from the late 19th century or very early part of the 20th century.
Size approx 56-57.
The bicorne would have been worn at the Papal Court or on diplomatic service.
The Purpose of the Order is that it honours Catholic laypeople for service to the Church in their professional duties or arts.
Instituted by Pope Gregory XVI in 1841 and later divided into the Order of St. Sylvester and the Order of the Golden Militia by Pope Pius X
