Joseph served as :
- 37748 Trooper 27th Btn Imperial Yeomanry (Younghusbands Horse) during the Boer War
- 24561 Pte 7th Btn King's Shropshire Light Infantry during WW1 until 1917
He received a gunshot wound to the knee and was admitted to 5 General Hospital Rouen on 12th April.
- 364120 Army Service Corps from 29th Sept 1917 after his wounding.
