Very Rare WW1 British Army Greece Campaign Salonika Photo Album of private / unpublished photos
The album is approximately A5 sized and contains 89 photos with images taken in Salonika, including many officers in pith helmets.
One of the group photos shows officers wearing cap and collar badges of The South Lancashire (Prince of Wales' Volunteers).
The 9th Battalion of the regiment is recorded as serving at Salonika so the soldier owning the album is assumed to be from the 9th Btn South Lancashire Regiment.
Some of the photos in the album are faded but most are high quality.
There are some loose notes from descendents of the owning soldier including one explaining that he was hospitalised and nearly died of malaria - as a result there are a number of photos of WW1 nurses and medical staff. The hospital photos show the owning soldier to be in an officer's hospital ward.
There is also a note describing one of the subjects as Uncle Jim Price.
There are 49 loose photos
There is a pack of negatives (labelled 'Delphi') from the same soldier of which 11 match to the set of loose photos. One of these is of an officer looking into a range finder. The bulk of the negatives are of family / holidays ) views in Greece/Delphi.
What makes albums like this extremely rare is that British soldiers were officially banned from taking photographs at the front during most of World War I, but the prohibition was widely ignored, especially by officers - as the war progressed, restrictions were tightened and some soldiers were court martialled for taking photos
Many of the photos are annotated on the back.
The final photo shows the regiment badge for the South Lancs.
