Original Victorian 1st Volunteer Battalion Royal Fusiliers 1880 pattern Scarlet Jacket, Belt & Crossbelt to one man.

On the shoulders it has silvered rope shoulder boards and with rank pips for a Lieutenant.

No name label in the jacket but attributed to Henry Richard Belcher Hickman, and both belt and crossbelt are named to him.

Victorian pewter / white metal Royal Fusiliers buttons securing the shoulder boards.

Jacket has very dark blue / black collar and cuffs facings with silver lace edgings and with Austrian knots to the cuffs. The silver lace denoting a volunteer battalion.

Lovely gilt metal and bullion wire Royal Fusiliers badges to the collar.

The jacket fastens with Royal Fusiliers pewter / white metal buttons - all present.

Jacket has a cream silk lining. 

Jacket condition is generally good with a small number of small moth holes on the front, but a more significant mothed patch at the bottom of the back and moth trails near one cuff. A darker patch on the cloth on one shoulder.

Victorian white leather 1st Volunteer Bn white leather Crossbelt mounted with a 1st VB badge, whistle and chain in white metal. The black patent leather pouch is mounted with a Royal Fusiliers badge.

The crossbelt is named to Hickman.

White japanned leather belt with lovely 1st Volunteer Battalion Royal Fusiliers solid but unmarked silver and gilt buckle which is stamped Hobson & Sons on the inside of the front. Complete with 2 white leather sword hangers. The belt is named to Hickman.

Jacket chest Size is small approx 35 inches. Armpit to armpit measurement is 17.5 inches. Armpit to cuff is 19 inches

Henry Richard Belcher Hickman

Born: 11 April 1866.

Attended Christ Church, Oxford University; matriculated 10 October 1884, aged 18, and took his BA in 1888.

He subsequently qualified in medicine at St George's Hospital, becoming MB BCh in 1894 and MRCS/LRCP in 1894. He was an ophthalmic surgeon.

He served with the Oxford University Rifles Volunteers, part of the Oxfordshire Light Infantry, and subsequently with the 1st Volunteer Battalion Royal Fusiliers.

During WWI he commanded the Chesham Company of the Buckinghamshire Reserve Regiment.

The London Gazette confirms that Captain Henry Richard Belcher Hickman was appointed second-in-command of the 4th Volunteer Battalion, Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, effective 31 August 1918.
