Original Victorian 1858 Pattern 11th Hussars Officers Busby & Tin named to J E H Balfour DSO - fully original and in lovely condition.

Beautiful Brown sable fur busby fitted with a Lancashire Hussars burgundy bag having flat silver braid and silver gimp button.

The Busby likely dates from 1884 when he joined the 11th Hussars.

Busby has never been fitted with a cockade, but still has its original stitched on triple gilt cord cap lines.

Gilt corded 15th Hussars chin chain backed with scarlet leather and traces of scarlet velvet.

Buff leather headband and silk lining.

Original cream white horsehair plume with red feather base, gilt ring, gold plume holder and also with its original plume tin.

Makers label for James Cooper of Maidstone.

In generally very good condition - small amount of fur loss on the top rim at the back.

Hawkes & Co tin, with name plate for J E H Balfour Esq, 11th Hussars.

Size approx 55-56 cm

John Edmund Heugh Balfour , born 23/01/1863, Eton 1877.

Commissioned as a Lieutenant in the 4th (militia) Bn Leinster regt 27/07/1881.

He transferred into 11th Hussars on 14th May 1884 and joined the regiment for its posting to Ireland.

He was promoted Capt 31/03/1891.

The regiment's subsequent posting was to India, however Balfour left in 1892.

He then joined the 1st Royal Devon Yeomanry in 28/01/1893 as a Captain, served in the Boer War with the Robert Horse.

He was awarded the DSO for his Boer War service as a Captain in September 1901.

His career progression was :

Major — by 1902
Lieutenant-Colonel — 1905
Honorary Colonel — 1908

He retired after he married in 1910 and then he rejoined the army in WW, 1including Reserve of Officers and Entrenching Battalion appointments in 1916, and then as a staff officer from 1917-18.


He died in 1952.
