2nd Private John Rowntree RFC / RAF (124347), 12th kite Balloon Section - Died in Service
John was born in 1892 and entered service with the Royal Flying Corps on the 11th February 1918 as an Air Mechanic. As per all RFC members, he transferred into the RAF on the 1st of April 1918.
Prior to the war he was a Cobbler and was married to Ethel Rowntree
He died of pneumonia 2 weeks after the end of the war on 25th November 1918, probably as part of the ‘Spanish Flu’ pandemic of 1918-19. He died in No.4 General Hospital Dannes-Camiers in the Pas-de-Calais area of France.
He was awarded a Memorial Death Plaque as a result of his death in service.
