He enlisted in either late 1915 or early 1916, reaching his unit, the 114th Brigade Ammunition Column (Royal Field) Artillery around January 1916. The unit was placed under the command of the 26th Division based in Salonika on the Macedonian front. They took part in the Battle of Horseshoe Hill and the battles of Dorian before advancing to the Serbian-Bulgarian border. On 12 Sep 1916, George was admitted to No.2 Convalescent Depot, No.31 Casualty Clearing Station, Ambulance Train with Malaria, returning to service on 17 Dec 1916.
